Stan Musial was one of the best baseball players of the 1940’s. But Stan’s greatness came from being off the field and on the field. Stan was a bold, but nice guy. During his time with the St. Louis cardinals he was never thrown out of a game.
At the age of twenty-one, and playing twenty-two seasons, Stan Musial threw left, and batted left handed. He played first base and outfield. In the years 1941-1963 Stan Musial was amazingly never thrown out of game. This was quite unusual for a player who played for twenty-two years.
One day in April 1954 in Chicago the Cardinals were losing 3-0 in the seventh inning. Paul Minner was up to bat next and there was a man on first, when Stan Musial smacked one down the right field line. The Cardinals and everyone in the stadium thought it was a fair ball. The man on first ran to third base, and Stan was on second happily, but first base umpire had incorrectly called it foul. Stan unaware that the umpire had called it foul happen asked the home plate umpire what had happened. He answered back and said the hit did not count because it was foul. Stan told him there was nothing he could do about the call. He went back to home plate and hit the ball in the same spot; this time it was called fair.
At 89 years old Stan Musial was and still is one of the best baseball players.
